A 14-year-old Nigerian girl whose parents forced her to marry a 35-year-old man was arrested after she allegedly killed the man and his friends with a rat poison-laced wedding meal.

Wasila Umaru confessed to police that she murdered her husband, Umaru Sani, and three of his friends because she had been forced to marry a man she didn’t love, and he had consented to take her.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, “early marriage” is a common practice in largely Muslim northern Nigeria, where 48 percent of girls are married by 15 and 78 percent are married by 18. Only two percent of married girls between the ages of 15 and 19 are in school, and 73 percent of married girls are functionally illiterate.

A spokesman for the Kano State Police Command said that the 14-year-old bought the rodenticide known locally as “Shinkafa Bera,” then diluted it into the water she used to cook the meal for her husband and his friends. Two of them, Nasiru Mohammed and Alhassan Alhassan, while another, Indo Ibrahim, later died at the hospital.

Ten others who also ate the food were treated at the hospital and released.

According to police spokesman Musa Magaji Majiya, Umaru “confessed to the act and claimed that because she does not love her husband, she resorted to taking this option. Corpses were taken to hospital for examination. Investigation is on top gear.”
